"Being Giraffe" vs. "Doing Giraffe"

Being Giraffe is when we are just in the flow of NVC consciousness, whether we are speaking in classical NVC language or whatever words we are using (or no words at all). One benefit of not trying to follow a classic/precise formula or language is that it can be easier to be authentic, because our mind is not occupied with that stuff. We may more easily access what is going on inside ourselves, and be more present to what is going on with others. On the other hand, we might miss things that the precise language or process helps make sure we mention, to check, etc.

Doing Giraffe is when you are consciously going through the steps, and being exact about language to be as clear and precise as possible. This can make it harder to stay authentic, because all that thinking can get in the way of just being, experiencing. It can also lead to over-focusing on how it "should be" and analyzing how others act and talk according to NVC "standards" and therefore correcting them when they are "wrong."

People who continue with Nonviolent Communication for a long time, generally find that they can Be NVC whether or not they are using any of the strict language & process of Doing NVC. (Or being giraffe or doing giraffe.) But along the way, and in any given context, it can become very important to study & follow the more mechanical doing, ultimately as a support for the being.

John Abbe:

A core aspect of this exercise is to have participants discover NVC principles for themselves, through their own experience.

Purpose
To explore deeply why we want things, and the relationship between those deep reasons and the specific things that might satisfy those reasons. Also gives many participants a quick taste of empathy without having to first explain it.

(segues well into Eliciting needs list exercise)

Exercise
Working in pairs
1. Think of something specific you want a specific person to do, and write down what you want to ask them.

Facilitator: Share an example from your own life, preferably something that is actually alive for you in the moment. The example that I first used was that I was staying in different places in Colombo and had too much stuff to carry around. A friend offered her place to store my extra things for six months, then after two months wanted me to move them out, offering another friend's house, outside Colombo.

I wrote, "I want you to continue keeping my things at your house."

2. Now, consider why do you want it? This is not an intellectual question, but about sensing inside - what will you get out of having it, why does it matter to you?

Facilitator: Invite people to turn to the person next to them and share their situation, discover an answer to this question and write it down.

I wrote, "I will have easier access to my things."

3. Now try for an even deeper reason. Forget what you wrote down for number 1 - why do you want what you wrote for number 2? Again, this is about sensing inside - what would you get, why does it matter to you?

This time also make sure you find something you feel good about. For my example, I might say, "because I'm lazy" but I don't feel good about that, so I would keep looking for something else.

Facilitator: Again invite people to turn to the person next to them and explore this question until they can write something down. (If people get stuck, it might help to think about what would happen if they don't get what they are wanting.)

I wrote, "So that i'll have time for more meaningful activities. Also, I would know that I'm cared for."

Debrief
Below are some questions to elicit their learning from the exercise. For each one, go through several people's situations. If someone did not get to a need (or deep enough for some shift to occur) in their step 3, give them some verbal empathy until they do get some shift.

In parentheses are some key points you might bring up if people don't come to them on their own. But keep in mind that their learning will be much more powerful if they discover and share among themselves. If you notice yourself starting to talk at length, find a way to wrap up and go back to inviting their learning. See if you can come up with additional questions that help people learn things that you would share if you were lecturing. Be willing to be surprised, and follow where they lead.

If people are stimulated by some of the resulting learnings, remember to offer empathy first. Once there is some connection, you might ask others what they think of the stimulating idea, or offer your own understandings or experiences.

Questions
A. Does anyone feel differently about their situation now than you did before this exercise? How?

(Being connected to why we want something can be valuable whether needs are being met or not - e.g. peace of mind, understanding ourselves/others. In this context, also might ask the empathizers what it what it's like to listen, to be in that role.)

B. How do you think the other person would respond if you told them your reasons (2 & 3) as well as the specific thing you want them to do (1)?

(We are generally more moved to help when we understand why someone is asking.)

C. Imagine you had to choose between 1 and 3. Which would you want?

(Make sure the choice is painfully obvious - i.e., 3 is a need, or nearly so. If they haven't reached that depth yet, offer verbal empathy until they get there.)

D. Other than 1, come up with several other ways that you could satisfy 3?

(There's always more than one strategy to meet a need. Use one person's situation as an example - preferably one in which they've come to a need themselves - come up with three different strategies that would also meet that need.)

E. Is there anything else you noticed or learned from doing this?

Notes and possibilities
As i keep doing this, i find it often leads organically into many of the other important elements of NVC - explicitly talking about empathy, the spiritual aspects of NVC, and more. One direction some have suggested is to continue the exercise as described below ("What causes our reactions/emotions?") --John Abbe 21:28, 28 September 2008 (CEST)

What are your experiences offering (or receiving, or reading) this approach?

What causes our reactions/emotions
Something to explore relating to what causes our reactions/emotions:

Get back into pairs and spend some time with these questions:

* How would it be for you if the person said no?
* How would it be if they said yes?

Then back in the whole group explore how that was, and at some point ask, "What is the cause of those reactions?" Allow the conversation to go where it will for a while. If it doesn't go to this by itself, ask how it is to imagine the cause is 1. And ask how it is to imagine the cause is 3. Especially, how powerful do you feel imagining it's 1 vs. 3?

Offering it about social change
Change the initial question to be about something that relates to social change.

Guidelines for editing the directory
* You do not have to be CNVC-certified to be in the directory, but please try to clearly and accurately describe your level of experience and what you have to offer.
* Update your information in the directory at least once per year. To make sure the directory stays up-to-date, please update your information at least once a year. (If your information hasn't changed since the year before, just update the date in the line "Date when I last updated this information: ".) Directory entries that are over one year old may be removed (by anyone).
* Use caution when adding your e-mail address to the directory. Email addresses on web pages are likely to be picked up by spammers who will send you unsolicited email. A better idea is to include your phone number or your website address instead.
* The directory is a community-maintained system, based on wiki technology. Wikis are designed so that there are no technological restrictions on what users can edit. That means that after you add your information to the directory, anyone else could edit it. Please only add/edit your own information in the directory, unless you have permission from someone else to add/edit their information. Also, occasionally check your information in the directory to confirm that it is still accurate. If you see something in the directory that appears to be vandalism or an error, please edit the directory yourself to remove (or fix) the vandalism or error.
* Jacob Gotwals created the directory, and he is its current volunteer administrator. If you have an idea for improving the directory, please confirm with Jacob before implementing your idea. For example, contact Jacob before adding a new section to the directory, and before making changes to the instructions on this page. (But you don't need to contact Jacob before adding, editing, or deleting your information in the directory, and you don't need to contact him before fixing obvious problems.) To contact Jacob, click here to send him an email about your idea.

John Abbe: formatting mostly

Change the initial question to be about something that they would like to ask someone to do about making different?
To accomplish that, what exactly would you ask, and of whom?

See also
There were questions and answers about the vision, and we talked a lot about the qualities we like in the European NVC Summer Festivals that some of us have been too, and other events such as the various Family Camps, and Circles of Hope.
Dominic is already planning a similar event for March/April (early fall in the southern hemisphere) of next year.
Carol expressed a lot of energy for organizing something for 2009. Barbara suggested her place on Vashon Island, and she and Elana talked about that has worked for NWCC Family Camps. We also saw great value in diversity, both of place and the kinds of diversity we can all find right where we live. Many NVC gatherings are not very diverse, in part perhaps because the workshop format speaks only to some subcultures.

Get back into pairs with these questions:

How would it be for you if the person said no?
How would it be if they said yes?

...then to in the whole group ask what is the cause of those reactions?

(Allow the conversation to go where it will for a while. If it doesn't go to this by itself, ask how it is to imagine the cause is 1. And ask how it is to imagine the cause is 3. Especially, how powerful do you feel imagining it's 1 vs. 3?)

Offering it about social change
Change the initial question to be about something that they would like to ask someone to do about making different?
To accomplish that, what exactly would you ask, and of whom?

A core aspect of this exercise is to have participants discover NVC principles for themselves, through their own experience.

Purpose
To explore deeply why we want things, and the relationship between those deep reasons and the specific things that might satisfy those reasons. Also gives many participants a quick taste of empathy without having to first explain it.

I've been learning and sharing NVC for a few years now. It's the best practice/theory/network i've found so far for learning/supporting people to have compassion (even for oneself! :-), and to inspire compassion from others.

Moved to Eugene, Oregon about a year ago, and am still familiarizing myself with the local NVC scene but am ready to start offering more formal training (i've been doing what i can to support the local network informally).

I continue to support the Sandhi Institute, remotely and by visiting Sri Lanka occasionally to help spread NVC there.

I'm also part of the NVC USA Project team; we organized the Compassion In Action conference for 2006, and hope to hand any future conference organizing off to others so that we can focus on other activities.

In 2004 i started developing some Learner centered differentiation exercises.

Beyond NVC, i'm interested in the Process Arts in general.

I also juggle and love living in community.
Recently went twice to something called Heart of Now . They have some things that NVC would benefit from (community basis, use of touch, always more teachers/assistants than students), and vice-versa (depth of connecting to needs). --John Abbe 20:54, 22 June 2006 (CEST)

I regret missing the second NVC Wiki Day. --February 2006

I've been playing hookie from NVC Wiki Day, but in a good (and related) cause - i've been talking with Linnaea Marvel, the organizer of the NVC World project. --John Abbe 06:17, 28 December 2005 (CET)

The last few days, i was away in Galle for an NVC training with students at the University of Ruhuna Engineering Faculty. Tantalizingly, there were Ethernet ports in the rooms at the guest house we were in, but we couldn't quite get the settings right - though we got as close as the campus web server (which ironically, i can't seem to access now). Probably just as well - i stayed more focused on the training than i would have been if i'd had net access. --John Abbe 26 December 2005

A proposed agenda for the first organizing call: (Feel free to edit it here, or contact John Abbe to offer input.)

* Silence

* Check-in:
** whatever you need to say to help you be present, and
** briefly why you're excited about this

* The vision/invitation: An American NVC Summer Festival, in a different part of the Americas each year, with a culture that is leaderful - using Open Space, no formal/paid NVC teachers, with people taking turns facilitating after the organizers 'hold' the first couple of days - and family-friendly, inviting both individuals and families to reach across nuclear family boundaries for community-building, support and connection.

* Questions and Answers about the vision, and people's experience at the European NVC Summer Festivals

* Who, Where & When:
** find out if any of us are interested to be the main organizer(s) for a 2009 or 2010 summer festival
** if not, explore and decide on next steps toward finding such people

* What else?
** other next steps if there's time & interest: money, outreach, etc.

* Scheduling next call(s)

* Check-out - celebration/mourning

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a live, instant messaging system that requires no registration. Much of the time there is someone into NVC on IRC who might enjoy giving you empathy, helping with questions about the wiki, or just connecting.

Web access to the chat is available by clicking here.

There's also standalone software for IRC, here's what we recommend for different systems (to get to the channel with these systems, here's the server: irc.freenode.net and channel: #nvc):
